AI Disclosure

One step uses a generative model. Everything else is arithmetic. Every file we produce says so in a form a machine can read, and every printed page says so in words.

1. Where the model is used

Paintoku uses a generative picture model for exactly one step: simplifying your photograph into paintable shapes. It redraws the picture with broader areas and less fine texture, in the style preset you picked, keeping the composition as it was.

That step is optional. You can switch it off on the Create page and build the sheet directly from your original picture; the rest of the pipeline is unchanged.

2. Where it is not used

Everything that has to be correct is produced by our own code, not by a model:

  • grouping the picture into the number of colours you asked for;
  • finding areas, and merging the ones too small or too narrow to paint;
  • tracing the outlines between areas;
  • placing the numbers — including choosing the point in each area furthest from any edge, and sizing each digit so it fits;
  • the colour key: names, approximate two-pigment mixing ratios, area percentages and paint volume estimates;
  • laying out the PDF at the size you selected.

No number, letter or word on your sheet is drawn by a model. This is why you never see the garbled text that generated images are known for.

3. The marker written into every file

Files produced by Paintoku carry a machine-readable disclosure that they were made with AI assistance.

3.1 PNG files

The disclosure is written into text chunks inside the file itself, so it travels with the image:

  • AI-Generated — true
  • Synthetic-Media-Disclosure — a sentence stating the file was produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence
  • Generation-Method — which part was the model and which part was our code
  • Software, Source and Creation-Time

3.2 PDF files

The same disclosure is written into the document properties (title, subject and keywords, including AI-generated), and printed in words at the foot of every page.

3.3 On this website

Every example picture in the gallery and on the home page was produced with AI assistance and is labelled as such. The outlines shown beside them were computed by the same code that runs on the Create page.

4. Why we do this

Transparency obligations for AI-generated and AI-manipulated content — including Article 50 of the EU AI Act, which applies from 2 August 2026 — require that such content is marked in a machine-readable way and disclosed to the people who see it. Paintoku launched after that date and claims no transitional relief. Beyond the legal point, we think anyone who paints one of these sheets, or receives a painting made from one, is entitled to know how it was made.

5. What the results do not guarantee

  • Colour names and mixing ratios are approximate. They are computed from the colours in your picture against a set of generic pigments. They do not correspond to the colour codes of any paint manufacturer and are not a specification.
  • Paint volumes are estimates for a single coat at the size you chose. Real coverage depends on your paint, your brush, your surface and how thickly you work. Buy a little more than the estimate.
  • Output varies. The simplification step is generative and will not give an identical picture every time. The steps after it are deterministic: the same simplified picture with the same settings always produces the same outline and key.
  • Nothing here is advice. A sheet is a craft aid, not a professional colour-matching service, and must not be relied on where accuracy matters — restoration, conservation or colour specification.

6. What we will not generate

Identity documents and other records, face swaps, portraits of other people used without permission, trademark reproductions and imitations of a living artist’s personal style are all out of scope. The acceptable use policy sets this out in full and applies on every plan.

7. Your pictures and training

Your uploads and the sheets generated from them are never used to train any model. If the optional simplification step is switched on, the request is used to answer that request and nothing else. Full detail is in the privacy policy.
